Today in pulp I'm looking at the work of Brazilian illustrator José Carlos de Brito e Cunha, better known as J Carlos! #SundayMotivation
J Carlos was born in 1884 and spent his working life in Rio de Janeiro. He worked on all the main magazines in Brazil from 1920 onwards.
He was a cartoonist as well as an illustrator, and became the first Brazilian artist to draw Mickey Mouse for Walt Disney.
He also worked on the satirical magazine O Malho, where his gift for caricature helped make it a commercial success.
But J Carlos is probably best known for his cover illustrations for Para Todos in the 1920s, and that's what I'll focus on today.
The perils of parties. Para Todos, October 1927. Cover art by J Carlos.
I kiss your hand madame. Para Todos, April 1927. Cover art by J Carlos.
Ride the wild wave. Para Todos, January 1927. Cover art by J Carlos.
Fairy wings. Para Todos, October 1926. Cover art by J Carlos.
Pierrot. Para Todos, February 1927. Cover by J Carlos.
All that jazz. Para Todos, July 1927. Cover by J Carlos.
Don't stop the dance. Para Todos, October 1927. Cover by J Carlos.
You can learn more about the artwork of J Carlos online at the Rio Then blog: riothen.wordpress.com/2016/08/12/bea…
That's it for the art of J Carlos today. I hope you enjoyed it! #SundayFunday
