Can we address the fact that it's 2019 and this is:
1. Something @Evil_Mog felt like he needed to say
2. He actually needed to say it
3. It's the least of what needs to be said in this situation.

Now let's talk about root causes, because many of us (myself included) share some blame for how we got here.

(Some) Men in infosec continue to dump on women because it's safe for them. Every time I've said nothing, I've reinforced it 3/

Not everyone is in a position where we can safely speak out without fearing significant consequences. But for those of us who can speak out, it's our duty to stop harboring those who rail against inclusivity (whatever form that takes). 4/

Applebaum continued his reprehensible actions because he felt safe. He felt safe because nobody spoke out. He WAS safe.

Plenty of people who weren't his victims could have said "hey, this guy is a douche. Get him out of our community." But we were silent. 5/

Anyway, before you see something like this and say "not my problem," consider that it's a problem that we all have some responsibility to solve.

Okay, so you're not in a position to speak up publicly. Here's some things you can do:
1. Don't patronize those who are the problem 6/

2. Patronize those being harassed (if you can)
3. Use WhisperNet. Talk with those in your peer group about the situation (those you can talk to safely)
4. Don't attend a conference talk by the offenders. This ABSOLUTELY works to take them out of the circuit. 7/

Do your part, speak up where you can. Don't tolerate people who don't support inclusivity. This will get better when we come together and stand up.
