someone recommended i watch this movie. in a controversial move, i am gonna watch it

right now
my review of this movie

-the clothes were dank. apparently rich people looked rad as hell at this time
-probably has never been a bigger gap between “badass intent” and reality than when people cut their hair into those little circles thats supposed to be like a crown of thorns
content wise, most surprising part was in the beginning when someone is talking about how there is no salvation outside the catholic church and luther asks about the saints of the orthodox church and if theyre damned then, i was like oh shit orthodox cameo
otherwise it was a pro luther movie so pretty much what youd expect. i think it was actually funded by some international lutheran organization. as we have covered before im not really a movie guy. ive probably seen like 30 movies max in my life so cant really critique it
not really an expert either but historical theology nerd side of me felt like the beginning of the story was extremely compressed but its not like theyre going to fit a section on catholic soteriology and his full life story into a two hour movie.
section on the peasant rebellion was kind of weird because it seemed to make it like it happened just because of luther (not really sure if thats the case), and his marriage with his wife wasnt really painted the way ive read about it, as more of a “strategic and necessary” move
as someone interested in narratives and how political and theological information manifests i also find it fascinating that the main popular talking points from the reformation are basically still “active” in the popular consciousness. of course there are doctrinal issues like
faith vs works that normal people dont really know about but when i talk to non-theologically inclined people about catholicism who arent catholic i feel like the same points from the 1530s come up immediately. like “lol indulgences right” or the splendor of st. peter’s as [...]
contrasted w the apparent humble poor focused conception of christianity. just interesting because the vast majority of people never think about anything deeply or think for themselves at all so, regardless of whats true its like the same bullet points get passed down eternally
as usual this is mfw when it comes to inter-christian debate, such is life in the cyclops household at the moment
