Things I can say definitively:

Jail does not help addiction.
Or mental health disorders.
Or homelessness.
Or poverty.
Or trauma.
Or unemployment.
Or hunger.
Or violence.
Or public safety.

Jail literally makes everything worse.
As the NYT says: “Prosecutors & police unions trying to thwart the will of the voters & undermine the public’s trust in long-overdue reforms should instead get to work making the change.”

For whatever it’s worth, a man in Brooklyn lost his hard won job for selling marijuana after an undercover NYPD officer approached & begged him for some.

Meanwhile, despite everything, Trump, Pompeo, Nunes, Giuliani, Mulvaney, Barr are still running foreign & domestic policy.
Brooklyn criminal court this week was *filled* w/ Black & Brown people. Charged w/ low-level offenses. Made to watch as each pled guilty, or were ordered to do community service or pay up.

Meanwhile, Trump, Pompeo, Nunes, Giuliani, Mulvaney, & Barr are still running the country.
One of the starkest things about the criminal process everyday is how harshly only a certain kind of people are treated. That harshness feels more disproportionate with everyday news of the Trump admin abuse of power. Then I remember: They were the ones who *designed* the system.

NY: Passes commonsense bail reform, in line with other states where jail populations have reduced & public safety increased. Misdemeanors & non-violent felonies. Fairness, fiscal responsibility, public safety.

Rochester, NY Cops: “Jail is the best place for an addict.”
NY: Passes bail reform that’ll ensure no one charged w/ most misdemeanors & non-violent felonies are jailed solely bc they can’t afford to buy their freedom.

Data: Reduces crime. Makes communities safer.

Oneida Sherrifs Office: “He’s gonna walk out & come to your residence!”
NJ/PA: Bail reforms have reduced crime & vast majority of people come to court without bail.

NY: Great ideas.

Onondaga County Sheriff: “Reforms will create chaos in the criminal justice system, great expense to the taxpayers, and most importantly, danger to our citizens.”

NJ & Philly: After bail reform, crime decreased, public safety increase, taxpayers saved money, & Black & Latino families were reunited.

NY: White carceral prosecutors desperate to maintain mass human caging, use cynical fearmongering lies to stop reforms before they begin.
Today, NY prosecutors & police are using the same tactics used by white supremacists from George Wallace to Donald Trump to perpetuate mass incarceration. As @nytimes Editorial Board called it: “A Sad Last Gasp Against Criminal Justice Reform.” Despicable.nytimes.com/2019/11/17/opi…
Criminal justice fearmongering should outrage you. If you think policy should be made on reason, not irrational fear. If you care about fiscal responsibility. If you want more public safety. If you want the system to be less racist. Hurt less & help more people & communities.
