NJ & Philly: After bail reform, crime decreased, public safety increase, taxpayers saved money, & Black & Latino families were reunited.

NY: White carceral prosecutors desperate to maintain mass human caging, use cynical fearmongering lies to stop reforms before they begin.
Today, NY prosecutors & police are using the same tactics used by white supremacists from George Wallace to Donald Trump to perpetuate mass incarceration. As @nytimes Editorial Board called it: “A Sad Last Gasp Against Criminal Justice Reform.” Despicable.nytimes.com/2019/11/17/opi…
Criminal justice fearmongering should outrage you. If you think policy should be made on reason, not irrational fear. If you care about fiscal responsibility. If you want more public safety. If you want the system to be less racist. Hurt less & help more people & communities.

This NY lawmaker didn’t fearmonger after Harvey Weinstein was released on bail he could afford. But for mostly Black & Latino people jailed pretrial, charged w/ far less—misdemeanors & nonviolent felonies—unable to buy their freedom, he’s started a petition to keep them caged.
The truth about the system Karl is now fighting to perpetuate:

In 2020, common sense laws begin in NY that are no more than a continuation of the measured, steady decline in those detained pretrial. Ending cash bail for misdemeanors & non-violent felonies. Early, automatic evidence disclosure. These reforms save lives & money& make NY safer.

Handcuffs are violent. It doesn’t matter whether the person cuffed ultimately gets charged or held overnight. They physically hurt. They cause trauma. They shouldn’t be used unless absolutely necessary. Here, a homeless person is cuffed for being homeless.
Here is a woman apparently in mental health crisis being back cuffed. Unnecessary use of force. City has responded she “wasn’t arrested.” First off: Being cuffed is legally an arrest. Second off: She should never have been cuffed. Zero justification.
Some observations from the last year of completely unnecessary cuffing. The default practice of back cuffing people in court regardless of whether there is any indication they need to be cuffed, regardless of whether they’re in physical distress, needs to change.

Insanity. A man was sentenced to 10-25 years for failing to provide an updated phone number under sex offender registration laws. Under WV recidivist law, he was then sentenced to life. WV Supreme Court found life was unconstitutionally disproportionate. But upheld 10-25 years.
People I represent are arrested, jailed, & convicted w/ additional felonies for failing to update an address. Like this man I met in July. Reported perfectly for 9 years. Then became homeless. Didn't have an address & didn't get mail. Zero tolerance.
There is *no correlation* btwn failure to register & reoffending. The only significant correlation associated w/ onerous, complicated, costly, & wasteful reporting requirements is reincarceration for minor technical violations & further marginalization.

My biggest pet peeve in the framing of the different candidates is the total disregard or willful obliviousness to the fact that Kamala has offered specific policies, often backed up by sponsored bills. I will share SOME of her proposals which you can evaluate as you see fit.
Kamala said Day 1 she would sign her LIFT Act, a prescription to address wage stagnation & provide working/middle class families relief. In summary:
-Households making up to 100K get $6K/yr credit or $500/mo
-Singles making up to 50K get $3K/yr or $250/mo

LONG THREAD: With today's announcement of substantial investment in data-driven pretrial criminal legal system reform, we are long-overdue for a broad conversation on addressing community needs, the role of philanthropy, & the ethics of certain models of social science research.
We hope this will be a starting point, though it appears the train has already left the station:

Good quality research. Evidence-based. Data-driven.

These buzzwords are quite popular in #cjreform circles, among nonprofits, researchers, foundations, & elected officials.
Yet no one required such rigorous investigation to incarcerate millions of people, including hundreds of thousands pretrial, which has caused generations of harm.

Research did not create our present criminal punishment system.

Racism & fear did.

So at least two Proud Boys made their way into the crowd of counterprotesters in #Philly to try to incite violence.

Their names are Simon Greenwood & David Kuriakose. Both were involved in the mob attack in NYC last month; Kuriakose was arrested and charged with riot & assault.
Here are the 2 Proud Boys, Simon Greenwood (L) & David Kuriakose (R), smiling for the camera last month when they took part in a mob attack on lone individuals in NYC. A month later, they're trying to incite violence in #Philly.

Almost like they're just ... violent people.
Dropping this thread here for those who are wondering about the non-white Proud Boys and how they fit into the broader (fascist) ideology that binds them all together.
