Big girls aren’t supposed to be confident+assured. We’re supposed to be in the background and take up as little space as possible.
Lizzo ain’t that and folks are mad.
Lizzo knows better.
She knows she’s supposed to be fully clothed in the church choir singing solos and starving herself to be given half a lukewarm chance at a solo career.
The fact those missteps become justification to deny support/talent is telling.
Be very clear: I know Black women, as a collective, are maligned.
I’m talking specifically about the brutal BS big girls endure for choosing to exist.
So much Lizzo is facing is because she’s a big girl and is making more room for her big assed self.
We can’t say Black people invented every genre of music then say those outside “Black” genres ain’t making music for us, too.
Michael Jackson is the king of pop. Every genre, literally every single one, bows to Beyoncé.
When non soul singing Black men have won Album of the Year without this level of resistance and vitriol, to do this to Lizzo is peak misogynoir and Black women—even those who are progressive—can uphold sexism’s blood stained banner from time to time.
Winning, though an amazing feeling, has always been subjective. Losing, almost always undeserved, is never about the artistic production in question.
Big Black girls who do it while in a community that only loves them if they have the *right* big girl aesthetic should be celebrated.
Do your own work and leave Lizzo alone.
