There was a shooting at a Black church in New Hampshire this morning and it’s not a national story yet.

If JUST LAST WEEK you talked about how Black Christians who forgive are the epitome of Jesus, then you can talk about when we’re attacked in the place where we worship him.

Reports say there are no fatalities and the shooter is in custody. For this, I’m grateful.

We don’t know a lot but we know enough to know that a shooting at a Black church, in this political climate, demands our attention.

Hearing about anything happening in our churches will always put us on edge and rightfully so. Unfortunately, they’ve not always been the safe spaces we needed them to be. I don’t know who the shooter is and don’t know why they did it. I just know it’s terrifying given history.

They were at church for an event for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The reporter on the scene posted a picture of a group of Black women huddled together, comforting each other. Behind them was the crime scene tape and ambulance. All I can think about is how much of so many of our lives revolved around being at church Saturday morning.

Rehearsals. Meetings. Events. If we weren’t there, our mamas and grandmas were.

Violence in Black Church space is a particularly intimate violence against Black women.

So the pastor was killed last week and the shooting was at his funeral this morning?!
