School visit today. As ever the best insight came from the pupils, but we only had a few minutes with them. Here's some questions I'm going to try and ask pupils in future that I think will go a fair way in understanding their school:
1. What do you remember about what you did in [subject] last year?
2. Why should we learn about [subject/topic]?
3. Why is it important to come to school at all?
4. Do you or the teacher get distracted in lessons by other children?
5. What should the teacher do about that?
6. What if those children have problems at home or struggle to learn?

Summers in Detroit are too fucking hot, Hank thinks, on a particularly miserable, humid July night. He remembers them being hot and miserable when he was a kid, especially that summer the a/c broke and his parents couldn't afford to fix it for a month. He'd felt like he was
melting every night as he tried to sleep, but he knows it's even hotter now. Just a bit warmer, every year.
Still, Sumo needs to go out; he does better with a real walk at night, not just a snuffle around the yard.
Hank does too, he's realized.
So: as the summer progresses,
Hank takes him for walks later and later until he's clipping on his leash no earlier than 9:30, when the sun's at least mostly down. It's pitch black by the time he's far from home, but Hank finds that he likes being out that late. Sometimes the fireflies are still out then, too.

Assembled loosely on the corner was a group of well-dressed people. Some were holding signs, some were passing out literature. One fellow was saying something to people as they passed by, struggling to be heard over the traffic.
Protesters? Shane wondered.

Here's the story of how I almost died when I was 24.
It was 2004, and I was living alone. I'd had bought a lava lamp years ago, moving it from place to place but never really plugging it in. This morning, I finally decided to plug it in... only to discover that the bulb had burned out.
Lava lamps work are, basically, wax suspended in water. The bulb heats the wax, causing it to melt and move up through the water, where it cools, causing it to fall. The result: cool trippy patterns.

1. The idea that what benefits the corporate sector also benefits ordinary workers (let alone that the stock market has much relevance to most Americans' economic standing), has been thoroughly debunked, but you'll also notice these assertions aren't backed up by any evidence...
...Trump's job numbers are indeed good, though that's due to the strong job market he inherited from Obama (it's now declined under Trump). Meanwhile, this small sample of widely discussed e.g.s shows Trump has failed in probably his key campaign plank: keeping jobs in the US.
