I've not seen a mention of this at all in our own Cherokee Nation newspaper. @CherokeePhoenix any chance you might cover this story? I think it matters to Cherokees.

For Native American Heritage month, I'd like to share a little about my Cherokee heritage.

I am the daughter of an Indian boarding school survivor who refused to cry when her parents visited her at school because she knew it would make them cry too.
I am the granddaughter of a "first generation" Cherokee born in the United States. He was born in 1922. All the generations of Cherokees who came before him were born in the Cherokee Nation, not the United States.
I am the granddaughter of Nancy Fisher Carey who was born in 1900 and died in 1957. She only spoke Cherokee and a bit of broken English. She had no choice in becoming a U.S. citizen. That citizenship was forced on her through the Dawes Act, allotment, and the statehood of OK.

1- Warren's ancestors had many opportunities to claim to be Cherokee but they didn't. They didn't even claim it when they were living smack dab in the middle of the Cherokee Nation (as squatters.)
One member of her family actually claimed to be white even when her husband and children were filing their Dawes claim as Choctaw. #ElizabethWarren's ancestors were not Native and never pretended to be.
That is unusual in false Cherokee claims. Usually the white family has a history of trying to get land or money due the Cherokees. Warren's family does not have that history. If, and that's a big if, Warren's family believes they are Cherokee, it's a new belief.

A student once asked me, in the middle of teaching Ancient Civilizations, “Why don’t we ever learn about Brooklyn?”

The notion bothered me all week. Why didn’t we? Student communities have so many rich learning opportunities that deserve to be explored outside of....
...a quick museum trip or a quick guest visit. We could have the same outcomes and use the same standards with Brooklyn-themed historical/current texts, experiences, and more. We wouldn’t have to roleplay, like my students pictured in my classroom above. ☝🏾
Instead of being confined to the classroom, we could learn without walls, on the steps of Jackie Robinson’s house, in the @Weeksville Heritage Center, in the archives of @BKLYNlibrary, & so much more.
