So some thoughts on attending the Men Supporting Women meeting in Glasgow yesterday, organised by @MichealConraoi, to whom I offer huge thanks. First thank you to all the speakers, it was an excellent mix of perspectives. Secondly thanks to the attendees and the points and... 1/?
@MichealConraoi Questions raised. It felt genuinely collaborative in seeking ways to save same sex protection for women. As many stressed this was a cross party and no party grouping, but it did feel to me as if the majority of persepectives were left wing... 2/?
@MichealConraoi It was a bit disappointing to not have more men but at the same time I enjoyed a meeting about how men could support women where women's voices were in the majority. That said @underaredflag's speech about how this was not an issue for men... 3/?
@MichealConraoi @underaredflag To think of disinterestedly struck a cord. Gender stereotypes are dangerous to men as well as women, and the reinforcement og the idea that there is a 'proper' way of behaving to be a man or a woman is so deeply regressive that I can't see how people miss it...4/?
One of the audience asked us to consider the question how we came to be here and mentioned the idea of it being a religion, and I feel that it is in the main just another tactic used by men to dictate women's behaviour with the add of fetishistic behaviour...5/?
Seven Hex's use of the trans umbrella underlines that it supports that idea of a sexual fetish erasing any dysphoria. The meeting was hugely supportive of the rights of trans people to be themselves. But the idea that a bit of excitement at dressing in 'women's clothes...6/?
Is the equivalent of being a transexual is an insult to them. And as ever the use of people with intersex conditions as some justification for reifying gender is horrendously insulting and scientifically illiterate. 7/?
As @underaredflag raised, I know this is not an issue that is well understood. The vast majority don't know of the extreme cases that self ID allows, and don't know of any difference between transsexuals and those covered in the trans umbrella where women are identified as... 8/?
@underaredflag As something people need to be protected from. As i have mentioned elsewhere, yet again I saw the visceral disgust of lesbians at being abandoned by so many gay men, as if the battle for same SEX attraction had been meaningless. If you cannot go to Pride and declare... 9/?
Pride in same sex attraction, it has become Shame, and we are back at the old trope of lesbians needing to be 'cured' by the right dick. I felt both scared and encouraged yesterday. I would love to see all parties in Scotland sitting down with @HotchkissRhona to get an idea 10/?
Of a prison governor on the impact on women in what were same sex spaces of self ID. I also hope that those of us males who were there do organise properly and that this just the start. Abd that the next meetings are not at secret places as the woman from 11/12
Castlemilk pointed out, we need to move away from. And again thank you to all who were there, and the wise women, the awesome lesbians, and gay men who get it who inform my allyship. Take care. X
