One simple thread

With one simple question

Whom do you expect to possess a moral compass?
It's not a trick question

Honestly

Do you expect your children to have a moral compass?

At what age?

Do you expect an adult to have a moral compass?
Note - my question above did not ask you to form a moral judgement on the actions of an individual

I asked do you expect them to have a moral compass

Not where it points to
Here is an example of how being a military leader imbues the expectation

"An ethical culture plays an essential role in clarifying to the troops their moral obligation and the kind of behaviors that are unacceptable and those that are held in esteem"

coursehero.com/file/14988352/…
Or here on leadership

"Without wise leadership, a nation falls; there is safety in having many advisers." – Proverbs 11:14 (NLT)

I am not asking where you learn your moral compass from

That could be a fascinating albeit slightly longer and divergent thread from the focus I am applying here

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7…
So back to our question

Do you expect an individual to have a moral compass?

Does a nation have a moral compass?

"President Wilson believed that the United States should serve as a moral compass to the rest of the world. "
apstudynotes.org/us-history/top…
Does a parliament or other legislative body have a moral compass?

"This Parliament has enormous moral compass"

hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2019-0…
Enough about institutions or nations

Now I am going to go back and focus on an individual

But first a few occassions where public servants (e.g. politicians) talked about morality
"John Major yesterday promised to lead Britain back to a traditional Conservative morality based on self-reliance, decency, the family and respect for the law."

theguardian.com/politics/1993/…
Theresa May - on a "moral duty"

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…
Shame she & her party couldnt apply that moral duty to the victims of austerity, operation vaken or her police cuts - but guess those are justified as knowable consequences of her policy - thats a whole other thread

Here is Parliament was able to debate the moral compass of these young people when talking about youth violence

Strange that discussing young people MP's can make a judgement about the existence of moral compasses
Mr David Lammy

"What is unfortunately being said about the moral compass of these young people is incredibly worrying."
hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2016-0…
Anyway back to our main question

Do you expect an individual to have a moral compass?
So now we turn to an interview

m.facebook.com/Channel4News/v…
And the discussion transcribed
CN: “Do you think that Boris Johnson has a moral compass?”
JRM: “I’m sure he has clear view of what he wants to do”
The simple point to note here is Jacob could not say yes
But on that vision

Where’s the plan ?

14/6/2016 Daily Telegraph

“Johnson and Gove, the two leading figures in the Leave campaign, have drawn up a blueprint for implementing a Brexit. Sensibly, it calls for flexibility and a period of reflection”
CN: That’s not a moral compass
JRM: Well that depends what you mean by moral compass but I am not looking for a leader of the party and of the country who is a practicing Catholic who could alternatively be in holy orders. That’s not the question.
Here’s a definition of a moral compass

dictionary.cambridge.org/amp/english/mo…
But hey I can’t spell Pinocchio properly without the aid of spell check so who am I to judge
Perhaps Jacob does not know how to use Google

Perhaps a few sessions from a technology tutor could help

I am sure Boris Johnson could recommend one for Jacob
CN: But are you looking for someone whose mistress had to have an abortion - knowing your views on abortion where you believe it shouldn’t happen, even in cases of rape and incest. Reportedly his mistress had to go and get an abortion. Are you happy with that as a man of faith?
Of course he is

He turns a profit from that customer demand

independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
JRM: it is not for me to judge other people’s private life. I wouldn’t begin to do that.
CN: I’m not asking you to judge. Are you felling comfortable?
JRM: You are actually. You are asking me to judge Boris Johnson’s private life and I don’t.
JRM: People have private lives that are different from their public lives.
JRM: What I trust him to do is to deliver in the public sphere, and one of the key tenets of Christianity is not to judge. Judgment will come from a higher authority in due course
Why do you trust him?

Did he look you in the eyes whilst lying?

How did that pan out for Mark Francois?
That’s weird as Michael Gove has a clear view of how he considers catholics who have a view on the common good

Good thing he didn’t say that about Sikhs, Muslims, Jews or any other faith

For those who want to read a bit more on Jacob Rees Mogg

A reminder of Boris Johnson and his view on Winston Churchill

lbc.co.uk/radio/presente…
But anyway back to the main question

When asked if a candidate for leadership of his party had a moral compass
Jacob Rees Mogg could not answer Yes

That is all you need to know
How he evaded the question is fascinating

to quote Dodgeball -
"Remember the 5 D's of dodgeball: Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge."
- Patches O'Houlihan.
So moving away from Dodgeball and how you avoid the question

"Make no mistake about it, language is not neutral. To pretend otherwise is disingenuous and dangerous."
pembrokevoice.ca/viewpoint/lang…
I am going to quote one other politician before I wrap up

Abraham Lincoln

"I should regret to see the day in which the people should cease to express intelligent, honest generous criticism upon the policy of their rulers.”

smithsonianmag.com/history/honest…
And now as a wrap up here is an old thread I wrote - ironically just a few days before Jacob Rees Mogg's interview

On the record of one Boris Johnson

It is a long one and wraps up many many others with their journalism and their recounts of Boris Johnson
