"Will Europe ever trust America again?" is really a requiem for the loss of European intellectual leadership. It used to be that America had the muscle and Europe the vision. Now, all over the world, the vision thing is in eclipse.

It's not just about the money, though in part it is. Essentially it is about the loss of faith in the great projects of statecraft, in its ability to build a heaven on earth. Perhaps this is not failure though, but success or at least realistic fulfilment.
The world remains a success, except for the enders of history.
