/ I think I am going to have to disagree with my friend @jandrewpotter about this article. I think this lets the right off the hook far too easily.
/ The assertion here is essentially that the North American right are just trolling frat-boys, eager to tweak the nose of pious liberals. Sure, this may animate some of them (especially those online) but the idea that the right's policies are simply mirrors of the left? Come on.
/ Do we genuinely think the Koch brothers and their ilk are motivated by trolling? No, they are motivated by power and control. There was a point 40 years ago when killing government and extolling markets was seen as a way for the powerful to remain in control. No longer.
/ Now that the right has seen that markets can in fact be used for progressive and egalitarian ends, and indeed, that an individualist ethos has largely undermined pre-70s views re: gender and sexuality, they have decided government's not so bad after all if in the right hands
/ So yes, Andrew's right to say that there's no betrayal of principle in the abandonment of markets. But that doesn't mean there is no principle. The principle is power and control. The principle is don't tell rich white folks what to do; rich white folks tell you what to do.
/ Immigration threatens that. New gender roles and sexualities threaten that. That's why Orban and Peterson and Trump and the rest all key in on them. Sure, there is an element of trolling at work, but it's not the important part. There's something much more sinister here.
/ That was weird. Disagreeing with @jandrewpotter is disconcerting.
