If you are a Brahmin and ashamed of someone calling your ancestors beggars then you are devoid of any trace of Brahmnatva in you. You are basically either a Kshatriya/Vaishya/Shudra or a Malechha by Sanskara and thinking.
There is a story of a Shudra in RCM who becomes Brahmin over many births and he says:
"चरम देह द्विज कै मैं पाई। सुर दुर्लभ पुरान श्रुति गाई॥"
(मैंने अंतिम शरीर ब्राह्मण का पाया, जिसे पुराण और वेद देवताओं को भी दुर्लभ बताते हैं। )
