My son and I have a holiday tradition. We call them Christmas Fun Nights.

Each is just an excuse to make a night of it. Getting a tree and then going out for hot chocolate. Going to see the house with the outrageous lights. Staying home and watching a Christmas movie.

The first is always baking cookies and watching the tree lighting.

We’ve been doing these since he was four. The lighting would run past his bedtime. We’d tape it and break it over two nights.

Last week, we missed the Rock Center lighting so we’re running behind.

Tonight is the National Tree Lighting though and it isn’t really about the specific tree anyway.

So, it’s our first Christmas Fun Night of the year.

One of my favorite traditions. Love these. Love that he hasn’t outgrown them.

It seems to me that we are increasingly watching politics unfold rather than doing anything in particular to influence them.

We’re watching the impeachment proceedings. We’re largely watching the primaries with a lulled “vote blue no matter who”.

This has me worried.

1/
We won the midterms because we worked our asses off.

Yet, right now, we’re having the life sucked out of us by an increasingly passive, draining hyper-focus on our TVs and newsfeeds.

We can keep this up through the holidays but come January, we need to get off our asses and get busy.

2020 is going to be far harder. Down-ballot candidates in red and purple districts are going to have a harder time.

If we aren’t working, we’re losing.

Stopped in to a pub to watch the late football games.

A man comes in, sidles up in the space next to me and orders a drink. Late 50’s maybe.

Wearing a Steelers shirt. Asks if they can turn one of the TVs to the game but he wasn’t really watching.

He wanted to talk.

Made jokes with the guy on his left and with me on his right.

He seemed like one of those affable guys who isn’t going to let you dive into your phone for longer than a few minutes at a time.

Introduced himself to me and the dude on his other side.

Other Dude was half-watching the Raiders game and buried in his phone and I had no particular rooting interest, so I put down the phone and tuned in to Mr. Steelers.

We got to talking. He polished off a shot and a beer. Then he backed both of us up for another round.

I have been critical of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on an array of specific issues and complimentary on an array of others.

It is truly amazing to me how effing insane mention of her name makes some people.

The rabid hatred is so over the top. It is fucking nuts.
And I have to say, it ain’t lost on me that people (both men and women) can hate a woman politician with a venom they don’t reserve for comparable male politicians.

People act like AOC murdered their cat.

It’s plum nuts.
I mean, AOC supporters used to rip me incessantly for being critical of very specific missteps (IMHO).

Now, the only high emotion I see re: AOC is from vehement haters on the left driven mad by even the mention of her name.

In 2017 I watched 31 versions of A Christmas Carol during December (one for each day) and I am finally ready to tell you the results. (a thread)
I sorted them into 2 broad categories, full length movies vs television episodes. There were 26 full length movies and 5 television episodes.
At the time money was a bit tight so I tried to find as many versions as I could for free. 14 were available at my local library, 10 were borrowed from friends, and the rest were found either streaming ( 4) and 3 I rented.

Note: Republican bullshit like this Byron York piece (which gets many of the facts wrong) ignores what Trump wanted. NOT to blame Ukraine for opposing him. But to blame them for the 2016 hack.

Guuuuyyyyys I'm sure I'm not the first one to think of this, but what if like... When Connor has nightmares, he doesn't just *experience* them, he projects them into household electronics by accident?
So like, he has bad dreams over all the shitty times he was hurt or killed, and Hank wakes up to static, voices, gunshots on his TV, blurry and poorly defined first person images. He legit thinks he's being haunted until he figures it out.
He catches on when he realizes all the memories are bad, that he's in some of them, that Connor's voice crackling over the speakers is closer than all the others. He wakes Connor up, freaked the hell out, and just holds him tightly enough to make him creak from the pressure.

Today I am going to try and cook for the first time since I was paralyzed.

I used to cook most nights for me and The Wife. After Mass on Sundays, I would make brunch.

I made every holiday meal for 17 of our 18yrs together. I did the #Christmas baking.

I started cooking as a child. I grew up in a chaotic household. Great politics but a chronically ill mother. I was the oldest sibling & the maternal stand-in.

I became a vegetarian for political reasons at 14, so I had to learn how cook that diet cheaply since we were poor.

In college I cooked for everyone. I knew how to stretch $.When I was in the domestic Peace Corps I taught people how to cook with next to no money.

I love feeding people.
I think food is an evocation of love for many folks.

I haven't been able to cook since I was paralyzed.
