Despite the deaths of several children after becoming ill in immigration custody and the urgency of this public health crisis, the physicians’ offer to vaccinate the detained children for the flu has been repeatedly denied. 2/
The @CDCgov has called for the doctors to be let in and for the children to be vaccinated, but @CBP won’t let the doctors help. The decision to not vaccinate detained migrants is cruel and could lead to more unnecessary deaths. 3/

These protections (aka the Flores agreement) have been in place for decades. They require that immigrant children are:

1⃣ not held in detention for more than 20 days;

2⃣ kept in safe and sanitary conditions when they can’t be released.
Why does the administration want to dismantle critical protections for children? Because they are constantly in violation of them. Instead of making things better, they want to manipulate the rules to keep kids in detention camps for longer periods of time.

These unsafe and unsanitary living conditions are a direct violation Flores Settlement Agreement. A Temporary Restraining Order Motion was filed to bring emergency relief to children who lack basic hygiene supplies, adequate nutrition, or sleep at CBP facilities. #CloseTheCamps

BREAKING: @TheIntercept just reported that DHS monitored the protests against family separation that took place last summer -- this is an abuse of power and we demand answers. theintercept.com/2019/04/29/fam…
These peaceful protests were in response to the horrific family separation policies that were being carried out by the Trump administration and that ripped thousands of children from the arms from their parents.
Documentation reveals that DHS tracked over 600 of our events including locations, Facebook accounts, and URLs.

Many of you asked for more detail about my trip to the border this week, so I wanted to take time to share my thoughts. (long but important thread)
I visited 3 facilities: the non-profit San Diego Rapid Response Network Migrant Shelter, the Otay Mesa ICE Detention Center, and the Chula Vista Border Patrol (CBP) Station. They interact with immigrants at different stages and were very different from each other. (2/ )
What is happening in CA is different than in TX or AZ. These differences reflect geography, history, culture, resources, and other factors. My first observation to share: the “southern border” is not a monolithic static thing and our leaders need to see that. (3/ )

This is Carlos Gregorio Hernandez Vasquez.

Just 16 years old when he entered the US alone, on May 13, 2019.

He was a healthy child.

An optimistic child.

He was alone when he died 7 days later in a Border Patrol Station in Texas.

Carlos is the most recent of the #TrumpSeven.
2/ Carlos had 8 younger siblings who called him Goyito.

He loved playing soccer and music, especially piano and bass.

Carlos came to US to help support his brother Edgar who has special needs.

When he arrived in Rio Grande Valley (RGV), he was healthy.

3/ Children like Carlos are supposed to be in Border Patrol custody for 3 days or less.

Carlos spent SIX DAYS in McAllen BPS — without reason — instead of transferring to ORR custody.

Carlos (from Guatemala) was caged with people from Honduras, El Salvador, Brazil, Nicaragua…

A student once asked me, in the middle of teaching Ancient Civilizations, “Why don’t we ever learn about Brooklyn?”

The notion bothered me all week. Why didn’t we? Student communities have so many rich learning opportunities that deserve to be explored outside of....
...a quick museum trip or a quick guest visit. We could have the same outcomes and use the same standards with Brooklyn-themed historical/current texts, experiences, and more. We wouldn’t have to roleplay, like my students pictured in my classroom above. ☝🏾
Instead of being confined to the classroom, we could learn without walls, on the steps of Jackie Robinson’s house, in the @Weeksville Heritage Center, in the archives of @BKLYNlibrary, & so much more.

"28 days in Feb we had over 66,000 apprehensions. During this fiscal year, so far today since October we have had over 268,000 apprehensions so far, as compared to the same timeframe last fiscal year, that's a 97% increase."
CBP:"It is well known at this time that adults with children will not be detained during immigration proceedings for illegal entry. The word of mouth & social media quickly gets back to those in the northern triangle countries that if you bring a child you will be successful." 2/
CBP on Border Fraud: "From April 2018 thru February of 2019 we've had almost 2400 fraudulent claims of families. Of those fraudulent claims some are folks who have claimed that they're under 18 and are not. Others have been fraudulent familial claims." 3/
