Few days back I had posted a video on reviving a dead dried lake. Following that many had asked me to share details of d works carried out. This thread will give a gist
1 Work started in Feb19 -identification of water bodies
2 Desiltation was done in lakes & percolation ponds 1/n
3. Site identification to create new ponds based on d study of terrain & catchment area was done.
4. All existing percolation ponds were desilted& banks were strengthened.
5. Most Ponds were linked by channels to ensure that excess water from one will get diverted to d other 2/n
6. Mounts were created using desilted soil at selected sites to plant tree species like Barringtonia, Ficus, Arjuna etc to provide shelter to birds.
7. Removal of weed/invasives was done in all these water bodies followed by planting of treesaplings close to onset of Monsoon 3/n
7. All the natural drainage channels leading to these water bodies were cleared to ensure free flow of water.
8. Wooden Bird Houses were fitted in the trees to provide additional shelter and feed to the free ranging smaller birds like sparrows, babblers, munias etc. 4/n
9. Water levels were regularly monitored during the rains & interventions like creation of trenches and bunds were regularly carried out to direct excess water to nearest water bodies to avoid flooding condition inside the premises. 5/n
Finally, these efforts got paid when North East Monsoon had showered good rains in this area. Maximum water storage was achieved & all the Wells inside the zoo has reached full capacity upto the brim. Hope this would help the zoo to remain water sufficient during summer 2020.
Added to this, the 'come-back' of a good number of birds and butterflies is more heartening and more to hear the positive feedback from the visitors.
The lake looks more beautiful with life and water right now 😊

don't forget the watch the video attached to the first tweet of this thread before you watch this one 👇
Few pics from these water bodies.. Will add more to the thread. Egrets and Heron pic captured in the lake by a visitor.
