I had a couple of reactions to this statement. More in terms of how teams work because I think this notion of “the CEO runs the company” is flawed ... full disclosure, I work for @jack @twitter
The CEOs job is hire the management team. The management team runs the company day to day. The team is held accountable to deliver against agreed OKRs. That’s the first point - this is very much a team effort.
It’s not that simple tho. You can’t just hire talent; you have to build a team from that talent. Create an environment they can perform in. Get the balance, dynamics, personality right. This is artistry that you can’t learn from a book imho
The management team’s job is to build their teams, create the environment, get the balance right. So, I think it’s important to look at the 10 people on the management team and 10 person teams they’ve each created - that’s whose running any given company
Case in point - I am actually out for 6 weeks on paternity leave - completely unplugged from work. It’s possible because I’ve got a great team that’s running my area of the business while i am out.
Back to the importance of dynamics - how teams play together is critical - the @warriors beat the @cavs in 14/15 because of teamwork. For what it’s worth my opinion is that @jack is good at recruiting talent but even better creating the environment in which they can perform
If working remote for 3 months is bad for a company then that company has bigger issues. I am from Africa and I wish more leaders would get out of the valley and go out into the world. We talk about diversity a lot; we need to be talking about diversity in a global sense
One other comment - I worry a lot about my product area and often find myself working in my head on nights and weekends. But it’s not because anyone asked me to or told me to. It’s because I am motivated to serve our purpose. I work for the purpose ...
