Today I learnt something

I was at a junction in Surulere this evening, waiting for a Keke and thinking about my life, Keke will come and human beings will rush it like flies, I said lie lie o! Me?

Mba! A whole Aproko Doctor! Do you know me? Time to book taxi.
The next Keke came and human rushed it again.

I saw one man walking with an older man meeting people and people were moving away from them.

In my mind... All these people don start again... I just connected my earphones and faced front.

"Wetin concern me?"
I turned and both of them were standing in front of me, the older man was "really old" in a dirty brown suit. The collar needed washing. The harmattan dust was not helping

The younger man said "Bros, you dey go brown Road side? This baba no dey see road and na that side...
... him dey go"
See me that has planned my exit since! 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

One part of me said, "go with him na"

The other part was curious, who was he? Who left a blind man by himself? Where's his walking stick? I sabi this format joor!

I no just come Lagos o!
I looked at the old man and my heart fell, I asked a few questions as to where he was going around that area, he was going to a church.

I nodded, let me book a ride and just take him to his destination.

The speed with which he held my wrist got me scared a bit
Is this not jazz? Abi na setup? Abi them go say kidnap? Are you sure a ride is the best thing?

Let me check my preeq sef, ah! It's still there. Whew

"what's you name, he asked me?
Nonso, I said

"What do you do?"
I lied, I told him I was a student, studying Mass communication.
He was quite intelligent not looking at his appearance! Knew quite a lot about this country. I couldn't follow the conversation properly because some part of me was still waiting for the scam or set up to be complete. So I was cautious,

He asked a lot of questions!
One Keke, and everyone rushed it again! I rushed too but not for me, for him. Strangers had seen us together so entering either a Taxify ride or Uber won't be best idea. Them go say kidnap, before you know, mob don set.

Christmas don reach na. Na ritual them wan use am do
While I was rushing, he grabbed my hand! I could sense he was scared also.

I told them, he's blind and needs this Keke, two people came down so we coukd enter.

I followed him to the church past my busstop, got him into the church and left after exchanging phone numbers
In that small moment I was grateful, sometimes we cry about certain things we don't have when there are people who would give everything for a fraction of what is on your plate.

We take quite a lot of things for granted.

If you're alive, you have a fighting chance
Be grateful
Also, you don't have to give a million dollars to be kind.

It's in the small things and they may not cost you a time. Just time and some effort.

If you can, make an effort to show at least one person kindness each day for the rest of the year
