Election night supplies.
The Cremant is in case there's anything to celebrate. I don't expect to be drinking it tonight frankly.
The fruit is also incidental. I bought it for psychological reasons rather than nutritional ones
Yep ok. Feeling pretty fucking nervous now.
Ok well that's easily the most fucking terrible thing I've seen in my life.
The very worst political behaviour is being given a mandate. It's being vindicated. Tonight is going to be heart breaking.
No point beating around the bush on this. It's almost impossible to imagine that poll being so wrong that Johnson doesn't have a majority.
We're about to experience the most right wing nativist government of our lifetime. Hard Brexit. Attacks on the Human Rights Act and judicial review. The nationalist culture war with a base in Downing Street.
But more than that: the attitude. Lies. Division. Attacks on the media. Hatred of immigrants. All vindicated.
Be horrified. Be depressed. It's fair enough to take the weekend and be sorrowful. But after that, we're going to fight.
Every day, relentlessly, with commitment. No going gently. No defeatism.
The people who are most vulnerable to this assault can't afford to have their allies give up. We fight this shit all the way. And eventually, we will reverse it.
My God. Blyth Valley goes Tory.
And right here is the problem. The failure to unite.
This was a bit simplistic. Took the photo before the Brexit party share. My bad.
I think it's fair to say I'm feeling rather depressed.
Osborne on ITV saying Labour has to move to the centre. They don't. They need to be led by someone who isn't completely useless.
I have started on the whisky.
More whisky.
Dreadful godawful bastard shitshow of an evening.
Workington not even close. It's a bloodbath.
Wrexham. Gone. Labour seats falling like dominos.
Labour gain in Putney, despite strong Lib Dem challenge. First of the night.
More whisky.
ITV reporting that Nigel Dodds has lost his seat.
This bottle of whisky is getting completely spanked. The missus is going to be alarmed when she wakes up and finds out I've finished the entirety of it.
The early problem for the Brexit-not-Corbyn camp is this: Labour support is also down in London. Not by as much, but it is down.
Dominic Grieve saying he doubts he's won.
Umunna loses in Westminster.
Labour and Lib Dem vote combined massively overshadowing the Tory vote in this heavily Remain seat. But split, so the Conservative gets through.
Thornberry doing a very leadery speech.
Raab survives.
Tactical voting really powerful in that seat. Labour vote plummeting, Lib Dem vote soaring. Just wasn't enough.
Ah, Zac Goldsmith gone. At least that's one nice thing.
Will take pretty much anything at the moment.
Can't wait to never listen to another Corbyn speech ever again.
Blames the media. Blames Brexit.
Wow fuck, he's stepping down.
Corbyn confirms he won't lead the party in any future election campaign.
Sedgefield gone. Unthinkable.
Johnson survives, of course.
Won't lie. It sickens me that people heard this man speak, with his blatant self-interested lies, and decided they wanted more of it.
He's lying now.
This man is a danger not just to our country, but to our discourse. With a large majority, he can do anything. Firm, confident, no-holds-barred journalism will be essential to holding him to account.
Swinson's gone.
Fucking fucking bloody fucking hell
149 votes.
It is imperative that Berger wins her seat. She's the right person to take over.
I'm not going to pretend that Swinson had a great campaign. She made some bad calls. But she has been badly treated. She did not deserve a fraction of the vitriol sent her way, and I've little doubt that was at least partly motivated by the fact she was a young woman.
And a very good humble, heartfelt concession speech. Contrast that with Corbyn's and you get a sense of the person underneath.
Phew. Yvette Cooper survives.
Close. Just over 1,000 votes. I'm honestly not sure I could have handled that.
Tories take back Kensington.
Grieve out in Beaconsfield.
It's all the most godawful shite wherever you look.
Starmer's speech also quite leadery.
326. It's official. It's done. The Tories have a majority.
The basic summary is as follows: Total despair. Catastrophic era of darkness. politics.co.uk/blogs/2019/12/…
Yep. I have written something. I am soaked in whisky and despair, so forgive any typos.
Berger didn't make it. Goddamn that damn near breaks my heart.
Damn.
Getting that from Politico and ITV, but doesn't seem to be confirmed yet
Gauke didn't make it.
I think the trend is clear now: if it is good, it won't happen.
Dennis Skinner gone.
Yeah, Berger didn't make it.
Fuck.
Hard to think of anyone who has been braver or more principled over the last couple of years than Berger. Hugely accomplished, strong values, excellent communicator, completely human.
And really, people decided that's not what they wanted. Really. That apparently is not what people are looking for.
And now Conservatives win in Winchester, my home town.
Yep, I think that's as good a point as any to go to bed for a bit. See you all in a few hours.
I imagine the world will be as dreadful or perhaps a little more so when we wake up.
