Hi! OK, BIG PERSONAL NEWS...

You may have noticed I’ve had a lot of down days on here. In 2014, I married my wonderful wife, after a decade together, and we began trying to get pregnant. It didn’t go as we’d hoped. First, 2 years of nothing. Then in 2016, 2 miscarriages...
Then in early 2017, an ectopic miscarriage. I can’t tell you how devastating it was to feel hope then despair on a loop.

The next step was IVF. NHS criteria at the time, in Surrey, required we wait 3 years, all the while our natural fertility decreased. It’s a catch 22.
We had a very kind doctor who got us in as soon as was allowed. We were funded for two rounds of IVF on the NHS. But both rounds failed. It was doubly heartbreaking because IVF is utterly brutal and watching my wife suffer for no end result was truly horrible.

Fantastic panel discussing the state of modern history - what are the challenges of 21st century public history? Who is history for and who is teaching it? @HistFestUK
Only six children took the African kingdoms module at GCSE last year. The new government reform to educational curriculum gives lip service but little actual support to teaching more diverse histories. 95% of UK teachers are white.
Do black historians only get to do black history? Is black history treated as a siloed thing? And how do we get more BAME students into history education at university postgrad level so there are more voices and more variety of research interests?

These audio interviews were conducted by the BBC in the 60s and 70s. The images are from the Imperial War Museum film archive.

The focus is narrow, a very British story; that was Peter Jackson’s choice to give it intensity. So it’s not a broad overview #TheyShallNotGrowOld
As you watch this, keep in mind that the British army also included millions of troops from the Empire; and all the armies sent by the Dominions (Canada, Anzacs etc); plus Chinese labourers. Plus Britain’s allies with their own huge armies. #TheyShallNotGrowOld
And worth adding, some of the footage in this doc was created in 1914-18 as propaganda. So, not all of it is authentic combat stuff; and some was designed to boost morale back home. #TheyShallNotGrowOld

Here's a thread about Christmas and schools. Yes I know this will trash my mentions. But I feel the need to say it anyway.
First of all, if you think Santa and reindeer and pine trees with lights on them are all "secular" and have nothing to do with Christianity...go away. Sorry that's not nice, but I'm not interested in that argument today. I'm Jewish, and those things aren't secular.
Schools shouldn't decorate for Christmas, have Christmas-themed activities, or host Christmas celebrations (unless they are explicitly a Christian school but you know we're not talking about that). This isn't just for non-Christian kids, this is for everyone.

I keep being asked what #Dickens would have made of #Brexit. Charles & Catherine Dickens took their family to live in #Genoa, #Italy for a year (in 1844-1845) – something Brits will no longer be able to do after 29 March. #travel
Before moving to #Italy, Charles #Dickens employed Antonio Gallenga, a political #refugee from #Parma who had migrated to #London, to teach him Italian. In #Brexit Britain, Gallenga would no longer be allowed to work legally.
#Dickens wrote a #travelogue about his year in #Italy. ‘Pictures from Italy’ details the family’s travels through #Europe to their new home in #Genoa, & Dickens' #travels around the country. In #Brexit Britain Dickens would no longer have the right to work in another EU country.

#Christmas is a day of remembrance and strengthening family bonds. The border wall behind me cuts those bonds. It disintegrates families seeking inalienable dignity.

It is a monument to bigotry, a piece of physical xenophobia.
The picture is from my trip to Tijuana in August when I spent a few days advising asylum seekers. I am standing on the Mexican side, but technically inside the US.

Here, hope and despair run feverishly as two turbulent rivers, each vying for victory in these roaring rapids.
Tonight, entire families hunker down in a tent city not a hundred yards from where this picture was taken, their futures deliberately made cruelly uncertain, and still our government throws up more walls of bureaucracy designed to break the spirit under a huge "closed" sign.

2/ Farming dominates the rural landscape. But in most rural areas more people work in industry than agriculture. #ffccontheroad
3/ Farmers told me that while their generation has had to diversify not only farm activity, but their own skill set. They need to be mechanics, accountants, labourers, investors, land managers and entrepreneurs. They typically have fewer staff than their parent’s generation.

Went to Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan today. Official population at 53,967, according to @UNHCR as of February 2018. All Syrian #refugees.

In many ways it was not what I expected.
First thing you notice is how remote the location is — some 100 kms east of Amman; 20 kms from Azraq town; 75 kms to Saudi Arabia; 255 kms to Iraq; and 90 kms to the Syrian border — from which its inhabitants fled.
At the same time, the harshness of the setting — a hardscrabble, sprawling 15 square km patch, scratched, etched and stretched out of endless rolling desert.

The perimeter was equally formidable, with security fencing, official patrols, check points and razor wire.
