ALRIGHT, here we go. My Favorite Music Moments in Movies From This Decade: A Thread. I've got my list ready, but I'll probably tweet these all over the next few weeks. No particular order.

Okay! Let's go:
#1: Baby Driver (2017) intro. I love music-heavy openings. It feels rock n' roll (guitar! car chase!) But the strings keep it cinematic. It's so fitting it feels like chicken/egg. Was the song scored FOR this moment? No, but Wright's love affair with sound makes us feel this way
#1: (cont.) Listen, Baby Driver is a musical. It's choreographed throughout. Wright talks about how beats in this scene were carefully crafted to go exactly to the beat. The windshield wipers wipe in rhythm. In this clip you can hear a horn honking in time to the song
Favorite movie music moment #2: Opening from Melancholia (2011)

This Wagner piece. It’s getting closer, it’s growing louder, it’s a fucking terrifying piece of music. But damn if it isn’t beautiful
#3 favorite movie music moment of the decade: Every single sound that happens during the jaw-dropping third act of Annihilation (2018). Both hands were shaking as I left the theater
(#3 continued) We can't talk about Annihilation without talking about the four-note alien motif. It struck all of us. We hadn't heard anything like it in a movie. It reminded me a lot of how we felt about the Inception "BWAHHH" (Which of course we now hear everywhere.)
#4: In "Us" (2019), the composer took the hip-hop bass in "I Got 5 On It" and turned them into menacing Hollywood-horror style string stabs. Peele is arguably the biggest, freshest voice in horror right now. His innovativeness fits perfectly with the song.
#5: This scene in Django Unchained (2012). One of the great things about Tarantino is, no matter which time period his films take place in, they still feel modern. So, yeah, this James Brown/Tupac mash-up is perfect.
#6 favorite music movie moment: The opening credits in Isle of Dogs (2018). I didn't care much for this movie, but the drumming here and the drumming throughout the score was great.
#7 Favorite Music Moment: Birdman (2014)

When any character is walking/in motion. Always accompanied by slightly frantic drumming. Birdman's unique score is entirely jazz percussion. No melodies
#8 Favorite Music Moment: Incendies (2010) opening.

The best part of "You And Whose Army?" by Radiohead is the powerful piano entrance. Villeneuve accompanies the entrance with a slow zoom that still gives me goosebumps.

happens at 1:27
#9 Favorite Movie Music Moment: JOHN WICK 3 (2019) HELL YEAH IT'S VIVALDI, BITCH
#10 Favorite Music Moment: Suspiria (2018) "Has Ended" one shot.

Listen, Thom Yorke's titular song is great but I love "Has Ended." The instrumental version plays behind this great one-shot. Sexy, dark, and smoky song
#11 favorite music moment: Spring Breakers (2012). Last scene

Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" orchestral cover
#12 Favorite Music Moment Of The Decade: Black Swan (2010)

Nina sitting at the mirror while the Swan Lake theme blasts
#13 Favorite Movie Music Moment:

The first time we hear “Rey’s Theme” in The Force Awakens (2015)
Best Movie Music Moment #14:

The last chord during the final moment of Whiplash (2014)
Best Movie Music Moment #15:

Hereditary (2018)

The low, chant-like droning that plays as Peter enters the treehouse
Best Movie Music Moment #16:

Hereditary (2018)

Who thought chimes and horns could be so terrifying?
Best Movie Music Moment #17:

Into The Spider-Verse (2018). Miles singing with his headphones on.

The throat clear before he starts, not knowing the words, the little thing he does with his finger when he gets to the high notes😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Best Movie Music Moment #18:

Interstellar (2014)

The music in this scene really struck me. It's not a complex melody. It's not traditional either. It's just a succession of slow notes. What touched me was how each new note felt unpredictable, yet so methodical.
Best Movie Music Moment #19:

Interstellar (2014)

Just going to let the music in this moment speak for itself lol.....hoo boy
Best Movie Music Moment #20:

I, Tonya (2017) when she lands the axel

“Baaaaaad giiiiirl / baaaaaad giiirl”
Best Movie Music Moment #21:

West Side Story’s “America” during Vice (2018) credits.

I waver between thinking this song is too on-the-nose & thinking it’s perfect. Not a fan of this version but shoutout to WSS stans who identified the song the minute they heard the wood block
Best Movie Music Moment #22:

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)

A FIGHT sequence set to Elton John’s “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting”

...starring the MAN HIMSELF. Doesn’t get much better than that
Movie Music Moment #23:

Whiplash (2014)

The close-ups of the musical directions. JK’s authoritative pause. Making sure every. single. musician’s eyes are on him. Perfectly captures what it’s like to rehearse in a professional ensemble undertaking the highest stakes
It’s just so clear that a competitive professional musician had a hand in this movie. Musicians, especially ones who routinely partake in competitions, know that the song starts, the music starts, before a single note is even heard
Movie Music Moment #24:

Tangled (2010)
“Mother Knows Best (Reprise)”

Menken took this fun song from the first act & gave it a dark twist with a few melodic moves that‘ll give ya the heebie jeebies(everything after :30 basically)

Goosebumps moment: “I won’t say I TOLD you SO!”
Best Movie Music Moment #25:

Moonrise Kingdom (2011) opening.

Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide To The Orchestra” playing Purcell with the great curtain reveal
I have so many things I love about the Moonrise Kingdom music I cannot wait to tweet about it more!!!! So symphonic!! Desplat’s original score, too. So string heavy, but sparse enough that it has that “could be played around a campfire” feel. Not too lush
