And now there’s the added excitement that it’s shortlisted for the #Oscars2020! I could not be more amazed that a project I was involved with as a researcher has made it this far! But raising awareness isn’t enough we need to continue the fight for policy reform.
Hardly anything done so far. Facebook & other data-harvesting platforms still unregulated. Influence companies like #cambridgeanalytica still unregulated. Electoral laws still very weak. Lobbying in the uk must be regulated. Stop shell companies & get dark money out of politics.
There’s been a lacklustre political will for change. The focus was on pleading with one company, Facebook, to change willingly - Zuck never will. We need recognition that this is a MUCH bigger problem of surveillance capitalism and dark influence firms & multiple policy reforms.
👏 big congratulations to @sanne_jehoul and @Karim_Amer33 and @profcarroll and Brittany and the whole team... let’s use this increasing profile for campaigning on real regulation in the influence industry, and data protections not further monetisation.
