The official White House position about this appears to be that the president lacks the bare minimum of restraint that keeps one from publicly attacking a widow and her deceased husband for the applause of the crowd.
As with many of Trump's most abhorrent comments, the Dingell fixation appears to have been spurred by him watching Fox, in this case a Debbie Dingell interview on impeachment over the weekend.
Trump's racist attacks on "the Squad" and on Rep. Elijah Cummings earlier this year similarly came in response to coverage on Fox & Friends' weekend edition.
Notably, the Squad and Cummings attacks were multi-day firestorms in part because Trump kept seeing Fox coverage of his tweets and lashing out again. By contrast, Fox & Friends has yet to mention the vile Dingell remarks last night.
