A common thread between this new Privacy Project piece and my PAPER piece is that consumers have been gaslit into surveillance capitalism using consent without rights as a cudgel. Industry deceptions that location data is “anonymous” lead to catastrophes like Cambridge Analytica.
I open my PAPER piece with the line: “We radiate data every day, all day.” And we’re made to feel guilty about it by an industry that abuses us and opposes new law. The Privacy Project is showing us what some of that daily data radiation looks like, making the invisible visible.
As with Cambridge Analytica, industry insider whistleblowing lifts veil for general public, shining a light into the dark world of adtech where mass data abuse for profit is the business model in a relentless quest for advertising attribution at all costs.
