I don't watch too much anime anymore, but I feel like I definitely watched a ton of anime this decade. Here is my real and ernest top 10 shows of the decade. A lot of really, really good stuff these last 10 years.
10. Hibike! Euphonium 2 -- an absolutely beautifully drawn school drama full of well-written and memorable characters. Between small details like the minutae of concert band, to the incredible ending and character development, this is among the very best KyoAni has to offer.
9. Kiniro Mosaic -- This sweet little 4-koma adaptation was the biggest surprise of 2013 for me. A punchy, slower-paced sitcom, it glides effortlessly between comedic set-pieces and light sentimental moment. Best sit-com of the decade.
8. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica -- Obligatory Madoka in top 10 list. Under the thin disguise of a magical schoolgirl anime is a haunting tale of sacrifice, duty, and self-reflection. Visually stunning and cleverly written, it's already turned into a classic.
7. Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight -- A creative and quirky concept turned into a fun anime full of gripping action sequences and dynamite character drama. The musical set-pieces are masterful and capture the essence of its subject matter.
6. The iDOLM@STER -- This shit is the butterfly effect that got me into this eventing hellscape that I am in today. This is the blueprint for "anime based on franchises" we'd see in the 2010's, appealing to both new and existing fans.
5. Monogatari Series: Second Season -- In my opinion, this is the apex of the Monogatari franchise. Our cast of oddities struggle to understand the world around them and themselves as darkness looms. Heavy and cerebral, this is a masterpiece in the art of the monologue.
4. Girls & Panzer -- On paper, yet another show about cute girls doing something unusual should barely register any attention, but the polish, composition, and sheer fun takes Garupan into a level it has no right being in. A simple story executed beautifully.
3. Houseki no Kuni -- The classic relatable tale of finding your own role in the world, and quickly being overwhelmed. The design of the show creates an uneasy aesthetic, and the series drips of mystery and intrigue. A rare gem.
2. Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou (Girls' Last Tour) -- Two girls journey through a desolate and endless wasteland with only hope to guide them. It's thoughtful, poignant, and deliberate. Yet it's light-hearted and ephemeral. The best slice of life show since Aria.
1. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho -- A whimsical adventure of four very different girls setting sail towards the frozen south to overcome their difficulties and find themselves. This beautifully crafted story finishes with a compelling and satisfying ending.
