<birthDATE>
"I don't think she's coming..."
"We should wait. You don't know that for sure."
"Come on, name one other time this has happened."
"Okay, don't answer that," Momo quickly cut her off. "This one will be here. She'll be here. I promise. Scout's honor!"
Sana furrowed her brows. "You were never a girl scout!"
"I'm leaving, Momo." Sana stood up from her seat. "Next time you try to set me up with one of your random friends again, can you not do it on my birthday?"
"She'll be here any minute, I promise. Trust me!"
Sana sighed, "You won't even tell me her name!"
"Because it's part of your birthday surprise! We had an awesome dinner with the girls earlier. Now you get to have dessert."
"Come on, aren't you interested to find out who your date is?" Momo nudged.
"Is it still a date if the other person doesn't show up?"
"Alright, Momo. Five minutes. Then I'm done. No more random dates. And I mean ever."
"Okay...fine. Five minutes."
Sana glared at Momo but sat back down. She busied herself with her phone. She checked the clock-- even started a timer and showed it to the other girl.
The coffee shop was boring and empty. It wasn't where she wanted to be on the night of her 23rd birthday, but Momo convinced her that this friend would be "the one". She didn't think so. But Momo was eager. And she was curious.
Sana looked at the photos she took with her friends from their dinner earlier that evening. She was happy. She was surrounded by people she loved, and yet deep down she knew she was lonely. She'd been lonely for a while. Maybe that's was why she agreed.
Sana checked the timer again. This was soon to be another failed attempt at a date. She lost count of Momo's attempts to be honest. Perhaps she was doomed to be perpetually single. Doomed to be a third wheel to Momo and...
...One minute left. Sana's heart started to race. She couldn't take her eyes of the timer which was quickly counting down to zero. There was a part of her that wanted time to stop. To slow down even.
Because what if this person was "the one", but she was just late?
No one.
Sana sighed.
Another failed attempt at some hopeless romantic's dream.
The blaring sound of the timer going off reminded her that she was still alone. She had been alone for quite some time.
Momo bit her lip, guilt-ridden expression on her face, "Sorry--"
"Sana...turn around. There's someone--"
"Hi..."
Kim Dahyun.
The girl who thought it would be better for them to break up because she was moving to another country. The girl who had once broken her heart. The girl who had left her single for five years.
Sana was rendered speechless.
That was when Momo gave her a hug and headed for the exit. "I'm gonna leave you two to talk," she whispered to Sana, "Happy birthday."
"It's me. Still short. Still very sorry for leaving you like that."
"Do you still love me?"
Dahyun laughed inwardly. "I'm glad you're still as blunt as ever."
Dahyun took a step closer to her, offering her the flowers again. "And if I said yes, would it make a difference?"
Sana took the flowers, pondering over Dahyun's question. She shrugged. "No, not really. It wouldn't make a difference."
"Because I still love you," Sana continued.
"You do?" Dahyun asked, eyes widened.
"Would you believe me if I said yes?"
"Dahyun?"
"Hmm?"
"You aren't going to disappear in the morning, are you?"
"There hasn't been anyone else. It's always been you."
Dahyun was the one she was waiting for. Whether it was five years or five minutes, Sana knew Dahyun was worth the wait.
Dahyun was the one for her. She'd always been the one.
