Parasite and Extreme Jobs in 2019 are two films that made me falling in love with Korean films. Swing Kids was also a good one.

Korean films has a diverse genre, from drama, crime thriller, period and horror. One thing that I find it interesting, it always has strong drama in it.

1. Train to Busan is the top of mind of blockbuster Korean films. Gong Yoo plays as a father who brings his daughter on a train to Busan while they face a zombie outbreak. A thrilling adventure with a strong heart! (8.5/10)
2. Sunny is a story about high school friendship that in the end they need to be separated for their own goods. In 20 years they are reuniting for the last time. (8/10) And I am proud to be part of the Indonesian adaptation entitled “Bebas” by Miles Film

3. The Admiral: Roaring Current is a story about the battleship between 13 Korean ships against 300 Japanese enemy ships in the Battle of Myeongryang. The intense colossal battle keep me on the edge of my seat. (9/10)

4. Silenced is a very dark tragedy that took place at Gwangju Inhwa School for the hearing-impaired, where young deaf students were the victims of sexual assaults by faculty members. I really2 touched by this movie. (9/10)

A Taxi Driver is based on a real-life story about a taxi driver who becomes involved in the events of the Gwangju Uprising. I am falling in love for the first time with Song Kang Ho in this film. (8/10)

6. The Outlaws is based on a real event. It follows a turf war between Korean and China gang while the police are called in to bring peace. I love its raw and gritty feels. (8/10)

7. A Man and A Woman is a story about two lovers who meet and begin a love affair in Finland. It captures a subtle emotion between these two lovers. Brilliant mise-en-scene. (7.5/10)

8. Midnight Runner is a story about two students at the Korean National Police University that witness a kidnapping so they embark on their own investigation. A simple premise with unexpected story (7.5/10)

9. The Last Princess of the Joseon Dynasty is forced to move and study in Japan. This is her life story trying to get back to her homeland. (8/10).

10. In Be With You, a man and his kid find a woman sheltered from the rain and she can’t remember who she was. She needs to find out their relationship before she needs to leave. A very heartwarming story (8.5/10).

11. Confidential Assignment is a buddy cop film. One from North Korea is assigned to catch a criminal who fled to South Korea. He is accompanied by helpless detectives from the South. Real fun and enjoyable (8/10)

12. The Merciless is a story about the loyalty and betrayal between an inmate leader and an undercover cop, who team to take over a gang. A raw and ruthless noir crime. Slightly too convoluted. Sol Kyung-gu performance is top notch! (7.5/10)
13. Memoir of a Murderer written as a journal by retired serial vigilante killer with Alzheimer disease who wants to stop another serial killer. Dexter meets Memento (8.5/10).

Made by Park Chan-wook, The Handmaiden is a con-man story to deceive and marry a heiress. I have mixed feeling with the twisted erotic story (7.5/10).

15. The Fortress is a story about a leader that battles in the fortress trying to decide whether to make peace or fight against the Qing dynasty (8/10).

16. The Concubine is set in the Joseon Dynasty. It centers around three characters, a royal concubine, a man torn between love and revenge, and a Prince. It is brilliantly written, with every character have their own life at stake (8.5/10)

17. Christmas in August is an understated drama about a simple man who realizes that he got a terminal disease. So he prepares everything for his father, his friend and his girlfriend. A really humble film! (7.5/10)
