I once had an acting teacher, Aaron Frankel, who began his first class saying there were three things everyone thought they knew how to do: baseball, sex and acting--because they'd seen them all done on TV or in a movie. I feel the same has happened to foreign policy.
But here's the dirty little secret: Not only is foreign policy hard to understand, takes years of study, requires a significant amount of experience to know how gov'ts & militaries actually work, demands a knowledge of history, cultures, etc., most professionals are bad at it.
So take it from your old Uncle David here, don't try it at home, kids. (Also: Just because people are elected to high office does not mean they automatically know how to do it. In fact, we have a lot of recent experience that backs that up.) Ok...that's it for now.
