Trump apologists are actually giving him credit for not threatening to do anything insane or to escalate the situation that he escalated further. He lied, showed zero comprehension of the situation and attacked Iran to advance a domestic political interest. But they love it.
And while we're at it, let's not let that last point slip away too quickly. What Trump did in attacking Soleimani was precisely what he did with Ukraine, he sought to use the power of the presidency to advance his personal political interests.
There was no urgent reason to do it & there were plenty of reasons not to. He may have lacked the authority to do it. We will not know the full damage he did for a long time. And it was all to wag the dog, to distract from impeachment, to help Trump personally. Don't forget it.
