In less than a week, applications for the world's leading science journalism program will be over. If you are a science journalist, I invite you to follow this thread. I'll explain why every drop of sweat dedicated to enrolling in @KSJatMIT is worth it ksj.mit.edu
First, let me introduce myself: I am an environmental journalist from Brazil, and the Latin American representative in the #KSJ2020 class. You can learn more about my work here ksj.mit.edu/dispatches/201…
As you can imagine, the program is highly competitive - only 5% of applicants are accepted –, but in that fact lies one of the great benefits: You'll learn a lot from your amazing-fellow science-journalists-from-all-over-the-world. Meet my colleagues here ksj.mit.edu/current-fellow…
Being open to making new friends is an essential part of this experience. Our group gets along very well: We traveled together, celebrated Thanksgiving, shared bread and drinks recipes. The KSJ staff is extremely warm and welcome to spouses and families
The stipend offered - $ 70K - is more than enough to live well and enjoy all the resources at Cambridge. I, for one, am here with my wife. A classmate came with her husband and three children. My colleague @rifish tweeted about that:
As regular activities of the @KSJatMIT , you will attend two weekly seminars on science or science outreach. The profile of the speakers is vast: From the director of MIT Press to the editor-in-chief of a leading medical journal; from celebrated nonfiction writers to...
... quantum physicists; from MIT and Harvard researchers to book agents. There are also workshops on several topics. @Ibbycaputo, for instance, shared all her amazing knowledge about podcast and audio storytelling. There are KSJ-organized tours to fantastic places like...
... the National Academy of Arts and Science, where Albert Einstein's handwritten letter is hanging on the wall, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution @WHOI, where you can learn about millionaire expeditions with underwater vehicles like Alvin whoi.edu/what-we-do/exp…
Take a deep breath: It is not over. As a KSJ Fellow you set up your class schedule and have the chance to be an audit student at both @MIT and @Harvard. Prepare to suffer: The paradox of choice takes on a new dimension when you access the disciplines menu of both institutions
Before I go, let me share my choices in the first semester. I decided to study Science, Environment and Public Policy with Susan Solomon (2007 Nobel laureate as a member of the IPCC) at MIT; and...
... History of Science with @naomioreskes, leading scientific authority in Climate Change, at Harvard; I am also studying programming. My wife, who is a biologist, took a course on Positive Psychology at Harvard – oh yes, spouses can audit courses, and attend seminars!
@KSJatMIT is one of those experiences that help reaffirm our core beliefs in the profession. You will deepen your knowledge in Science, and will experiment a boost in your motivation to communicate knowledge in these difficult times. I wish you good luck!
