A problem with modern books is that they are often garish and ugly, designed to capture your attention at the competitive book store but not to fit into your private home. The solution to this is the Japanese custom one-sheet-fits-all book covers... #ブックカバー
When you buy a book in Japan, the store staff will fold and cover your book in their own custom made paper, designed to be understated and easy on the eye. Not only does it protect your book but you can read in public and on trains without people know what you are reading.
Each store has their own subtly different design of cover paper, some designers and illustrators make their own and sell them in blocks. There's even collectors and antique ones in good condition sell for quite a bit of money.
You can make your own with a simple sheet of paper in a tone or color that fits your room, instead of submitting your every waking moment to the garish cover designs of commercial books. Diana Lorence used this to great effect in her "Innermost House", not even penning in titles!
Here's a video of how the book sheets are folded, for us mere mortals. Pros in book stores who do this everyday can fold these perfectly for any book format in under a minute.
The next step is to buy/make cloth or canvas or leather covers for your books. There's even shops that sell these in bulk if you want a less garish book shelf at home.
So just like one way to make your books more "your own" is to add personalized ex-libris tags or labels, you could make your own "book covers" and make your home a little less stressful-looking.
