Just stumbled upon an interesting addendum to this thread on a 1952 film advocating for toleration and understanding across ethnic and racial divides. Shocking I know, but the Mississippi White Citizens Council reviewed it....and...hated it!
Here's the review from the October 1959 edition of the official paper of the White Citizens Council.
According to the segregationists who ran this newspaper, the good citizens of Mississippi were able to fight off the meddling of Jewish outsiders ("globalist elites," one might say) foisting unwanted diversity and the "forcible integration of the races" upon the South.
On the same page of the newspaper is an article about, you guessed it, Breitbart's favorite heading, "Black Crime." The subtext of the article is that the presence of black people anywhere in America is "a problem."
If you want to read this primary source yourself, it's been digitized by the University of Mississippi library. clio.lib.olemiss.edu/cdm/compoundob…
Can we just pause for a second to note how hysterically reactionary these folks had to be to watch a film that encourages WASPs to be less mean to white Polish immigrants in the North, and immediately think it was a threat to white control in Mississippi?
When you're a reactionary hammer, everything looks like a nail. Advocacy for human kindness in a diversifying world looks like "communist brainwashing." Crime is what "black people do." And cosmopolitan types (i.e. Jews) are to be instinctively distrusted.
