Berkeley Earth Temperature Results for 2019

berkeleyearth.org/2019-temperatu…

We conclude that 2019 was the second warmest year since directly measurements became available in 1850.
The global mean temperature in 2019 is estimated to have been 0.90 ± 0.05 °C (1.62 ± 0.08 °F) above the average temperature from 1951 to 1980.

This is equivalent to being 1.28 °C (2.31 °F) above the average temperature of the late 19th century.
The temperature increase over the globe is broadly distributed, affecting nearly all land and ocean areas.

In 2019, 88% of the Earth’s surface was significantly warmer than the average during 1951-1980, 10% was of a similar temperature, and only 1.5% was significantly colder.
We estimate that 9.9% of the Earth’s surface set a new local record for the warmest annual average.

In 2019, no places on Earth experienced a record cold annual average.
Every country was warmer in 2019 than the average climate of 1951-1980, including many that have already seen temperatures of +2 °C.

We estimate that 36 countries had new records for annual average temperature.
As should be expected of global warming due to increasing greenhouse gases, the temperatures observed over land have been rising faster than in the oceans.

The land average in 2019 was the 2nd highest observed. The ocean average in 2019 was the 3rd highest.
If the historical rate of warming since 1980 is allowed to continue, then the Earth will reach 1.5 °C of warming above preindustrial temperatures by around 2035 and 2.0 °C by around 2065.
Based on current conditions, 2020 is likely to be similar to 2019. It may be somewhat warmer or cooler but is highly likely to become one of the five warmest years.

In addition, we estimate a roughly 20% chance that 2020 could set a new record for warmest year.
