So I watched Nancy Pelosi's speech and none of what she's selling is true. That's the part of politics I don't like, the overselling of something to such an extent that it's patently unrecognizable from reality, like endangering national security and interfering with elections.
House Democrats also weren't remotely impartial in the impeachment inquiry so them demanding such from Senate Republicans is laughable on its face. Asking another president for an investigation of what on its face looks like a corrupt act, & literally coercive in nature, is fair.
I get the criticism of such, but their rhetoric does not reflect the actual actions Trump admits to, and nobody disputes, because it's in the transcript. That's just the abuse of power allegation. The obstruction of congress charge doesn't endanger national security/elections.
Nancy Pelosi was also all over of the place. Not just because she's falling apart before our eyes (I remember when she was younger in Congress and physically intact) but she struggled to recall her own members' names, and couldn't spot Jeffries 4 people away from her.
Democrats went _waaaay_ over their skis this time. kind of like last time. And the time before that. And somehow we're supposed to be shocked in a month when they can't get 20 Republicans to vote with them. What's it going to be after this? Let the self-flagellation continue.
To be clear, neither charge is over anything that endangered national security or this country's elections. If Trump said "fabricate something" or orchestrated a hack, or made a formal agreement on something like that, there would be meat on the bone. Something to impeach over.
House Democrats couldn't get a single Republican to sign onto the impeachment inquiry or that vote to impeach because a) House Democrats handled it terribly, and b) because the weight of the argued wrongdoing doesn't match the charges. A censure would have had GOP signatures.
But House Democrats were literally goaded by the mainstream and social media to pursue impeachment, a fool's errand. The base was influenced by MSM and twitterati to demand something that could never succeed on its merits. Anyone not locked into partisan politics could see this.
Democrats have repeatedly stepped on a truly special type of rake. Steel-plated, and the bruises have been spectacular. I can't wait for the trial, as the process will be fun to watch, though not as fun as the verdict, and the reactions afterward.
I have no sympathy for anyone who believes the Democrats at this point. You don't have to be a Trump supporter to see what's going on. As long as you aren't locked exclusively into the national leftist narrative, or suffering from some sort of derangement, you should enjoy this.
There are a lot of rational leftists who are pretty cynical right now, and they shouldn't worry. The people making these mistakes over and over will eventually be replaced by more rational actors. Hell if I know when, and I don't personally care, but this can't last forever.
Nancy Pelosi won't be House Speaker after the 2020 elections. She'll be forced to step down. I can't imagine the House retaining their current numbers, but even if Democrats retain control, she'll be quietly shuttled out of power - for the sake of the party.
There will be a DNC autopsy should Trump win reelection. I don't know if they'll heed it's warnings, but I remember the Democrats learning from their mistakes after Mondale, and they'll recover from this eventually. They'll have to, or their base will tear them apart.
The GOP learned pretty damn quick once Trump was elected in 2016. The DNC needs a course-correction, too. What they're doing doesn't work. And I think their current field of presidential candidates reflect that. I'll digress, but I'm glad impeachment is over. Bring on the trial.
