Just a reminder folks. Here are the two sections of the 5 page Trump-Zelensky transcript that are specific to Joe Biden. Note that everything else has to do with Crowdstrike and the firing of the prosecutor Viktor Shokin. Recall that Yuriy Lutsenko was his replacement.
I'm not one to believe the Crowdstrike server was exfiltrated to Ukraine. I do believe there is a political network of sorts in Ukraine whereby the DNC and a variety of private actors, NGOs, NABU, US officials working at the direction of our administrative state for common goals.
The problem with the Ukrainian mess is that it's convoluted, and we have politically-directed outlets and networks not covering it in a way that's a) complete, and b) digestible to the public. So what we have is misinformation, and that sabotages the prosecution and defense.
This is why I've been fairly reluctant to opine on this topic much. The people we expect to "get it right" can't even keep the details straight. That's why interviews on TV are dumpster fires. The wrong questions are asked, and the wrong answers are delivered.
And the reason the dialog is so bad on this is purely for the sake of political interest. I think one can reasonably criticize Trump's specific mention of Biden, and the use of Rudy Giuliani and/or Bob Barr - as well as defend wanting to know what role Crowdstrike had in 2016.
Also it's completely valid asking for more details of why Biden had a prosecutor fired, on the explicit condition of the release of foreign aid, as captured on video. Maybe Biden was corrupt. Maybe Shoken was. Maybe both were, or neither were. This is not a forbidden subject.
Also the fundamental question on whether or not negotiations or quid pro quo is coercive when they are voluntary transactions is nipped at the edges all too often. And we don't need red herrings on "well the aid eventually was given." Neither side has said there was coercion.
The president is under no obligation to give military aid in a transaction, or money in forms of loans, or any sort of free assistance, if he believes the other side of that transaction is corrupt. The transcript itself demonstrates Trump and Zelensky trust each other.
But it's clear the president was concerned about corrupt influences and that some in Zelinsky's government may still be corrupt, just as every government on the planet has corrupt influences within. (and that's really a whole other topic sadly not addressed here)
Someone can reasonably criticize Trump's specific mention of Biden, and the use of Rudy Giuliani and/or Bob Barr to investigate 2016, they can reasonably criticize Biden denying a billion dollars in aid if a prosecutor in a foreign country isn't fired. This isn't whataboutism.
It's a request of sanity in the political discourse. I'm actually fine with Joe Biden denying aid if the thinks Viktor Shokin is corrupt, and a part of a larger conspiracy or corruption. From my view it's a lot more likely politics was the real reason, but it's hard to tell.
But my larger point is this issue isn't merely the absurdly specific "Trump coercing Zelensky to do oppo research on Biden because he's a presidential political opponent" vs an oddly general "Ukrainian corruption conspiracy theory" - I'm saying this is more complex and confusing.
