It's about government, not journalism, but this story captures so well why we carry on with the critique of his "normalization." The Archives' attempt to avoid controversy requires that it distort the record, the opposite of its public mission. And you get the controversy anyway.
In journalism I have called this "the production of innocence." pressthink.org/2013/10/the-pr… It's not just false balance, but a continuous "public showing by professional journalists that they have no politics themselves, no views of their own, no side, no stake, no ideology."
