It's about government, not journalism, but this story captures so well why we carry on with the critique of his "normalization." The Archives' attempt to avoid controversy requires that it distort the record, the opposite of its public mission. And you get the controversy anyway.
In journalism I have called this "the production of innocence." pressthink.org/2013/10/the-pr… It's not just false balance, but a continuous "public showing by professional journalists that they have no politics themselves, no views of their own, no side, no stake, no ideology."

About opinion editor @JBennet. The people who run the Times thought he "had edited and published the finest single piece of Opinion journalism of the past several years: Ta-Nehisi Coates’s 'The Case for Reparations.' That’s the guy they wanted to run Opinion at the Times..." 2/
The Opinion section has grow a lot. From around 70 in 2016 to 115 people today.

Then there's Bret Stephens. Turns out the Times wanted him for a long time, as did the Post. The current Times publisher several times suggested him. It wasn't til Benett came on that it happened. 3/

Thought experiment: A group of Harvard students came up with "a prototype of an imagined news outlet covering U.S. politics." shorensteincenter.org/an-experiment-… They began with a long list of problems, including addiction to conflict, centrist bias, lack of context, short attention span. 1/
They said they kept coming back to the larger cultural problem. "The intense polarization of the population, especially where information is concerned." And so: "We decided to try to address that problem with a ‘platonic’ website which might explicitly try to bridge divides." 2/

Morning, Australia. I have some questions about this article in the @Australian that claims "fire bugs" are fuelling the scale of the country's bushfire disaster. Something smells very, very off about the numbers.

But that adds up to.......172??????
@australian My first thought was that The Oz was intentionally including people who were charged w/ breaking a fire ban to have their BBQ, or dropping cigarettes (DOUBLE the number of NSW arsonists), b/c the 183 matches the NSW total charged w/ fire offences:

I’m about to board to start my journey home. #Australia it has been an intense and wonderful week of seeing good friends, making new ones, speaking at @UNSWCentreIdeas #unswideas, @wheelercentre #broadside2019, and appearing on #qanda. I stand by everything I said.
It is fucking ridiculous that the ABC has pulled the show from repeat views & that the government is involved via a ministerial statement & parliament inquiry. Such censorship & govt interference are dangerous & sinister esp in light of raids against the media in #Australia.
It is instructive that outrage over daily and actual violence against women and gender diverse people does not warrant such swift investigations or govt action. Instead, asking “How many rapists must we kill until men stop raping us?” terrifies white men into action.
