De onde surgiu o termo "cop" para policial?

Cop surgiu na Inglaterra no século XVIII e originou-se da palavra copper (cobre), que era o material que se cunhava moedas à época. Mas por quê?

Porque o salário do policial naquele tempo era de um penny por semana.

Assim, a Libra era dividida em 20 shillings, e cada shilling tinha o valor de 12 pennies. Era muito pouco, mas na época até que nem tão pouco assim.
As moedas que eram feitas de prata eram a partir do sixpence, mas as outras, como o penny, de cobre.

Agora não é difícil fazer a associação, né?
Penny acabou recebendo o apelido de copper e os policiais, por receberem essa quantia absurda, ficaram sendo chamados de Coopers. Daí veio a fora curta Cop!

Claro que isso mudou, e lá eles são pagos mais dignamente.
