Cat words in Indian subcontinent are mainly from 4 sources: biḍāla बिडाल ; mārjāra मार्जार; pūṉai பூனை and meow (onomatopoeic words)
Amarakosha (3-4 Century) gives the following names for a cat : ओतु, बिडाल, मार्जार (One that wipes or cleanses itself), वृषदंशक (a rat devourer) and आखुभुज् ( a mouse eater) otu, biḍāla, mārjāra, vṛṣadaṃśaka, and ākhubhuj.
In Mahabharata there is an interesting dialogue between a mouse called Palita, who is an expert on arthaśāstra, & a cat named Lomaša.
Finding themselves in a situation of danger, they strike an unlikely alliance that allows both to save their lives, & in the course of the story they discuss at length issues such as trust, friendship, etc.
The cat Lomasa is said to be a buddhiman "clever" and vākyasampannah "possessed with eloquence''
