An important point to recall when thinking about whether level playing field commitments in State aid, environment and workers rights are reasonable.
Worth bearing in mind that if the EU didn’t have State aid rules, the UK would be pretty alarmed by having no tariffs on (eg) possibly subsidised French car exports, and would be demanding strict assurances on subsidies in return for zero tariffs/quotas.
The only reason the UK has no ask on the State aid issue on is that it can largely free ride on the EU State aid rules: and the EU’s ask is best seen as avoiding giving the UK that free ride.

Interesting piece by Meg Russell. Problem is that that ship has sailed, for better or worse.
What would be interesting would be a cross-country study of the effect in Parliamentary democracies of having leaders chosen by party members. It is now, after all, pretty standard in most of them.
My hypothesis is that FPTP tempts activists in the major parties to vote for “true believers”: but if you are in a PR system and know power will come only with a coalition or by getting >50% of the vote, voting for purity of belief and refusal to compromise makes little sense.

A couple of thoughts on what @ChrisGiles_ says here about a possible solution to the differences between the EU and UK on State aid.
First point is to note what the UK has *already* agreed in the Withdrawal Agreement. The effect is that the UK Government is going to continue (until the EU otherwise agrees) to have all sorts of UK measures (tax in particular) subject to the full panoply of EU State aid rules.
That creates a powerful incentive (if you are going to have a domestic anti-subsidy regime) to replicate the substance of the EU regime: otherwise you will end up, for many UK measures, with two separate regimes to think about. Not ideal.

On the topic of the FTPA, it’s worth looking at how the Irish Constitution (building in Westminster practice) deals with the power of the executive to dissolve the legislature. #IFGElections.
Key point is that it makes it clear that an executive that has no majority has no right to dissolve: the head of state can refuse (and would presumably be likely to do if an alternative government can be formed).
We might be hesitant to give by statute even that discretion to the monarch.

So, some tough messaging on level playing field (LPF) provisions coming out of a preparatory meeting between the European Commission and member states today, which I'll try to explain in a thread. Take home message: in the EU-UK trade talks LPF is going to get very dirty...

I wonder whether Irish commentators, focussed naturally enough on the possibility of a deal, and the backstop, have not been neglecting the implications for Ireland of Johnson's stated aims for Brexit.
(Johnson's aims matter since there is every likelihood that he will win the next general election and be around for a while.)
Even if a deal goes through, so we avoid an imminent no deal, Johnson's desire to avoid level playing field commitments must surely make it quite unlikely that there will be a free trade deal with the EU any time soon.

Political Declaration:

Structure is as proposed by Barnier months back ie Economic Partnership, Security Partnership, Cooperation on Areas of Interest (research etc)

Big Question: Will this be 'Canada Dry' or 'Turkey Plus'
1.
'Ambitious, broad, deep, flexible' partnership means v little ie a free trade agreement (FTA) or customs union plus cooperation on law/justice, foreign policy, security, defence. There won't be frictionless trade,not same rights or obligs as w EU mship, integrity of EU's CU/SM 2.
So big hit to trade in goods & services given not frictionless borders, espec to services given aim for goods is no tariffs/quotas nor rules of origin checks - but will be regulatory checks; proposals for services - equivalence, 'ambitious' etc beyond WTO (not v ambitious) 3.
