Today, the 200th anniversary of #GeorgeIII’s death, the King’s unparalleled collection of more than 3,000 military maps, views & prints in the Royal Collection are available online, offering an extraordinary insight into the art of warfare & mapping. bit.ly/2U4OrLD
#GeorgeIII never left the south of England or fought on a battlefield, but his vast collection of more than 55,000 topographical, maritime & military prints, drawings, maps & charts allowed him to travel the world from his library at Buckingham House.
Upon #GeorgeIII's death, his son gave his father’s collections of topographical views & maritime charts to the British Museum (now in @britishlibrary, but kept the military plans due to their strategic value & his own interest in warfare tactics bit.ly/2U4OrLD
In 1766 Scottish military engineer Captain William Roy wrote to #GeorgeIII proposing a national survey of Britain based on his map & survey experience during the Seven Years War. This letter is regarded as the founding document of the @OrdnanceSurvey bit.ly/2U4OrLD
Browse militarymaps.rct.uk to explore more of the diverse range of material from 16th-18th C, from highly finished presentation maps of sieges, battles & marches, to rough sketches drawn in the field, depictions of uniforms & fortification plans.
