Imagine if an organization with a history of human trafficking started an NGO to “end trafficking,“ but instead of sex workers it was construction and manufacturing workers, dangerous jobs and 47% of all trafficking victims.
Imagine they were so worried about construction workers that they pushed for laws that made it illegal for construction workers to work together for safety.
Imagine continuing to push for these laws after the workers they "care“ about got lengthy sentences solely for working together.
Imagine if instead of fighting for rights to make construction safer for both consensual and trafficked workers alike, they fought for laws that got workers evicted, imprisoned and deported.
Imagine if the government gave this org hundreds of thousands of euro every year to help get workers out of construction, but there was little or no evidence of the money being spent on any sort of viable exit routes.
Imagine if instead of fighting alongside construction workers to improve conditions, every construction worker you met told you they hate this org, that they don’t speak for them.
Imagine that when construction workers did speak up they were ignored by this org, or called the “construction lobby” and spoken over.
Imagine then that a sister org to this org, founded by the same religious order, wrote a report, and that report showed that the law failed construction workers for all the reasons they said it would, but your solution is for the government to give that org even MORE money.
Imagine that this sister org said that the only solution is to only consider research that agreed with you? That the voices of current construction workers that depended on their job for survival should be excluded “for the greater good.”
The reason that these NGOs don’t target construction and manufacturing is that those industries have money and solicitors and can protect themselves. They choose sex workers because we are kept marginalized and stigmatized because of their church’s influence on our society.
