@SethCotlar has been tweeting about the period of 2009-10, during the rise of the Tea Party and Glenn Beckian populism, as the origin point of the GOP's descent into the abyss. I couldn't agree more.

@SethCotlar In fact, John Amato and I cowrote a book published in 2010 arguing that precisely this fate awaited both the GOP and the country because of the ascendance of these forces, titled: 'Over the Cliff: How Obama's Election Drove the American Right Insane.'

@SethCotlar PoliPoint, the publisher, went out of business, and the book out of print, shortly after it hit the shelves. So it died a quiet death.

I remain pretty proud of it as a prescient work, though. I wrote the concluding chapter, and I think it holds up well.
@SethCotlar And the final pages feel poignant to me now.
@SethCotlar Doh! Shoulda @'ed @JohnAmato !
@SethCotlar Let me refine that: I think Seth sees it as one of several key moments in that descent; more _an_ origin point than _the_ origin point. His thread points to others, including the Reagan years. Others have mentioned Gingrich. All true. But ...

They all got on the bus '09-'10.
