I remember the Clinton impeachment well, and I remember that when the Senate voted ... it all felt OVER. Final. Settled. The issue had been litigated, the voters had spoken in Nov 1998, and the accusers had to own themselves beaten. This fight ... it's not even half time
10 of 55 Republican senators voted to acquit Clinton on the perjury count in 1999. 5 of 55 Republicans voted to acquit on the obstruction count. The lead promoter of impeachment in the House, Newt GIngrich, had resigned as Speaker and quit the House by January 1999.
By January 1999, the 2000 presidential contest had already begun. The immediate front-runner, George W. Bush, distanced himself from Clinton impeachment. In the first candidates' debate in which Bush took part, impeachment went unmentioned. All over. nytimes.com/2000/01/27/us/…
othing like that holds now. Trump scandals will dominate the 2020 election year - both the ones we know about and the unceasing stream of new ones Trump creates. The people who are emerging from the impeachment fight most scared are the Republican senators who protected Trump
What kind of night is Cory Gardner having? Hard to know, since he's declined to meet Colorado voters for 2 years. coloradotimesrecorder.com/2020/01/thowba… Will Martha McSally speak about her support for Trump in Arizona? Doubt it.
