GOSFORD PARK is, in my opinion, very good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
When people talk about the great Oscarfails of previous years, A BEAUTIFUL MIND over GOSFORD PARK is one that should come up more.
(also LOTR: FOTR and MULIN ROUGE and not-even nominated 25th HOUR and TRAINING DAY and FAR FROM HEAVEN and oh look sometimes SPIRITED AWAY is also listed as a 2002, so it was a pretty good year for movies that are great, and also for A BEAUTIFUL MIND)
This is true and my confusion is caused by the horrible and wrong and widespread decision to list the Academy Awards by the year of the telecast rather than the year of the films it is awarding.

But the point remains that the A BEAUTIFUL MIND win should be closer to the top of the Oscar flub conversation, because 2001 was an *astonishing* year for movies and A BEAUTIFUL MIND was a handsomely-made mediocrity.

Quite true. Yet a poisonous life causes others to suffer its toxic effects. Rejoicing the end of the suffering a poisonous person causes you isn’t rejoicing their demise; it’s rejoicing the end of suffering—a natural, healthy, and appropriate response to such cessation.
Put another way: if you want people not to rejoice at your death, don’t live a life that causes so much relief in its ending.

A life people might rejoice leads to a death people might mourn—and vice versa

Well he'll certainly have learned his lesson once he completely gets away with it from people who concede that he did it.
Aside from the fact that Ernst's position, like those of all her colleagues, is the cynical "it was a crime but so what?" this statement reveals either how stupid they think their followers are or how little they think it matters anymore to give a remotely believable rationale.
Oh for sure he seems contrite.

Shocking, until you realize that the Republican position on any Republican crime, lie, corruption, or self-serving betrayal of the national interest, is, quite literally, "so what."
There have been in the past political parties to which membership has rightly been considered a moral failing, and in which membership has rightly been considered, all by itself, a disqualification for holding any position of public trust.

The Republican Party is such a party.
They stand for domination, and bigotry, greed, and performative cruelty, and the right to pursue any sort of corrupt activity and to put themselves above every law and authority, in the pursuit of those objectives. The right to do it all openly.

That's the Republican Party.

OK, I really have to keep this quick, but: first, a reminder that 6-7 advances for single books are payable in 4 installments, typically spanning 4 years, sometimes more. An increasing # of 7-figure advances are 5-installment. But let's say the deal is $1 mil, 4 installments.

One of the most pernicious god damned ideas we need to stop passing on to our kids, especially white kids, is that bigotry lives in intent, driven by hatred. This is an idea that primes good people to spend decades inflicting damage to everyone around them.
It makes the best of us into assholes who have to then spend decades, or more likely the rest of their lives, unfucking themselves.

Over the next 3-4 weeks, I shall be spending a chunk of my time documenting & reporting Election Model Code of Conduct violations by BJP+allies in Maharashtra & Haryana.

This time (unlike during the Lok Sabha polls), I want this to be a coordinated effort. (1/7)
Mere reporting isn’t enough - in cases of blatant non cognizance by the Election Commission, the significant violations need to be taken to the Bombay HC & the Punjab & Haryana HC.

Candidates who violate the code MUST be disqualified. It remains up to us to ensure that. (2/7)
While the elections are a mandate of the people, it is important that they remain free and fair and aren’t snatched away by lumpen elements.

This time around we have the power to prepare ourselves and monitor things with greater diligence and take appropriate action. (3/7)

Good morning! Today the Senate Judiciary Committee is having a hearing Sen. Graham's "Secure and Protect Act," his plan to rewrite asylum laws.

Importantly, this will be Acting DHS Secretary @DHSMcAleenan's first appearance since Friday's tariffs announcement.

The bill would allow for vastly expanded detention of families and children, block asylum for anyone not going to a port of entry, and create other new limits on asylum.

I just had an epiphany: #beautiful has become my new favorite word. That may seem strange given my circumstances. In June 2017 I was diagnosed with incurable stage IV #lungcancer.
I naively thought that maybe my lifetime of being a health and fitness junkie would insulate me from such a medical fate. Wrong. And So here I am, fifty-one years old and not sure how much time I have left on earth. I know I could, or maybe should, feel angry, cheated, jaded.
