Every week I read something about preventing catastrophe or avoiding calamity. This downplays the severity of our predicament.

Maybe we can prevent total catastrophe, avoid utter calamity. But just look at the ecosystem damage already done, and yet to hit.

Catastrophe is here.
I don't know, perhaps I'm wrong on this. Plenty of my favourite thinkers still frame things in this way.
It's already a total catastrophe for so many people and has been for decades.

And my brain keeps coming back to the idea of asking the birds whether they feel the extinction of their species is catastrophic or not. Or the mammals. Or the insects.
