It’s #TimeToTalk about people who are employed to use their experience of mental distress in MH charities ie. @MindCharity @TimetoChange. #LivedExperiencePractitioners #Peers experience discrimination, derogatory pay & active blocks to career progression #TimeToListen #TimeToAct
#TimeToTalk Many people don’t realise is that large generically run charities such as @MindCharity are given majority of funding, whilst orgs run by people who live with mental health conditions & grassroots groups are not funded. We are becoming extinct. theguardian.com/society/2019/j…
The National Service User Network @NSUN is run by ppl with lived experience of Mental Health condition, but even that has lost its funding - the one org trying to support and keep our SU-led orgs together! #TimeToTalk Why can money go to @TimetoChange but not SU-led national org?
It’s #TimeToTalk about REALLY sharing decision making and power with people who experience poor mental health. This means prioritising funding OUR organisations. It means employing us in #LivedExperiencePractioner roles beyond only peer support workers, to directors & managers.
It’s #TimeToTalk about large generically run orgs & charities winning big contracts and then subcontracting them at a much lower paid rate to organisations run by people with #MentalHealth conditions (who may have lost contract) at a much lower paid rate. That’s not equality.
It’s #TimeToTalk about all of these issues, the invisible discrimination that keeps those of us living with mental health conditions in poverty, forever held in stigma. We need to run our own campaigns & MH charities, make our own decisions, be entrusted with our own finances.
#TimeToTalk If you want to learn more, follow people who work from an experiential lens and read their work: @BeresfordPeter @SchrebersSister @DianaRose160 @AlisonF101 @Freedom71573997. Some aren’t on Twitter, so Google Dr.Colin King, Jayasree Kalathil & Premila Trivedi
#TimeToTalk If you want to learn more about the critical & activist discourse around mental health, @RITB_ aka ‘Recovery In The Bin’ is a great account to follow. @dropthedisorder and the various ‘hearing voices network’ accounts ie. @LondonHVN. @Post_P_Pioneers tweet about #LXPs
#TimeToTalk there are also excellent critical blogs by individuals with experience of MH issues who actively combine this insight within their work. People like @HoppyPelican @RRowanOlive @DavidGilbert43 @junglesheen @RaiWaddingham and loooooads more. Even I have a go sometimes😂
So... it’s #TimeToTalk, but also #TimeToListen & #TimeToAct. We ‘Mentals’ are talking, we need you to listen to what we say, and then act. Preferably by giving us the funding and letting us get on with sorting our own sh* out. We’ve had a LONG time to plan for this - so trust us!
