Minister @AdrianaLaGrange, there is *absolutely* room for the perspectives of groups like Extinction Rebellion in our classrooms, just as there’s room for the perspectives of industry. Let me explain why. #abed #ableg
One aspect of a social studies teacher’s role is to foster critical thinking as students engage in an exploration of multiple perspectives on an issue.

Our goal is to help students develop the skills that will enable them to become active, informed, and responsible citizens.
In fact, the current PC-developed social studies program of studies offers a number of opportunities for students to examine perspectives on issues. For example, in Grade 10, students are asked to examine the perspectives of both pro and anti-globalization activists.
When I taught social studies in very conservative parts of rural Alberta, I ensured kids were exposed to multiple perspectives.

I didn’t force my beliefs on them. They didn’t leave my classroom as radical activists, but they left with a broader understanding of issues.
They learned to question.
They learned to problem solve.
They learned to research.
They learned to defend positions they might not personally support.
They learned respect for diversity. They learned empathy.
These are the skills we want our students to leave school with. We get there by engaging them in multiple perspectives, and by creating classrooms that welcome debate.

Minister, we won’t get there by limiting the curriculum or by villainizing those with whom we might disagree.
