What Graham says here, “I didn’t think I’d have to talk about it long. I thought others would see this was obviously wrong, and step in” rings true. I remember thinking it several times.
I thought it about athletes with male bodies taking part in women’s sporting events. “Well, people who know about sport will soon point out that that is completely unfair and put a stop to it”!
I thought it when I first heard the cotton ceiling rhetoric: “Well, all women, and certainly all lesbians, will immediately identify this as homophobic and misogynistic and rise up in fierce opposition!”
I thought it when I read the comments of the GIDS clinicians who resigned. They had heard colleagues joke: “Soon there will be no gay kids left!” Surely, I thought, gay people will realize that there is a strong element of homophobia here and protest!
I thought it when I saw lesbians being vilified and mocked during Pride in Lancaster, cheered on by Stonewall’s chair. I thought: “Surely now the LGBT community [hoho] will realize that if lesbians are no longer welcome at Pride, the gay rights movement has become corrupted.”
I thought it when I saw a BBC “education” programme telling young children there are over 100 “genders”. Surely, I thought, everyone involved in children’s upbringing & education will see the confusion and potential harm in teaching this minority belief as “fact” and stop it!
